Mecca Alliance Vows Continued Efforts to De-escalate Regional Tensions

ISTANBUL, August 31, 2026: The Political and Strategic Defense Committee established under the Mecca Alliance for Joint Defense between Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting lasting peace and stability while continuing efforts to reduce regional tensions.

In a joint statement issued following the committee’s meeting in Istanbul, the three countries said they would continue supporting de-escalation, restraint and peaceful solutions to crises. The statement placed regional security and stability alongside the alliance’s collective defense objectives.

Alliance to Be Further Institutionalized

Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan agreed to take additional steps to institutionalize cooperation under the alliance, strengthen solidarity and reinforce the credibility and effectiveness of collective deterrence and defense. The three sides said their cooperation would also contribute to broader regional security efforts and cooperative security aimed at achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace.

As part of that process, the alliance will establish a permanent secretariat in Saudi Arabia headed by a Secretary-General. According to the statement, a Pakistani Secretary-General will lead the secretariat during its first three-year term.

Defense Capabilities and Joint Production

The three countries also agreed to strengthen defense capabilities and military cohesion through joint activities, closer defense-industry cooperation and the development of joint production and technologies.

The measures are intended to provide a more structured framework for cooperation among the three partners while improving coordination in areas related to defense readiness, technology and collective security.

Joint Defense Agreement Signed in Makkah

The Mecca Alliance follows the joint defense agreement signed in Makkah on August 7 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The agreement is designed to strengthen collective deterrence against aggression and states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all three.

Focus on De-escalation and Regional Stability

The committee’s latest statement emphasized that the alliance’s defense framework would operate alongside efforts to lower tensions and encourage diplomatic solutions. The three governments said they would continue working within the accord to support peace, stability and cooperative security in the region.

The Istanbul meeting marks another step in translating the August agreement into an institutional framework, with the planned secretariat, joint defense activities and industrial cooperation expected to shape the next phase of the alliance.
